CHAIRMAN, CURRY KENNY GROUP
The Curry Kenny Group is a collection of a dozen or so companies involved in property development and aviation. The group’s principal, well-known former Australian Ironman and Olympian, Grant Kenny describes aviation as his real passion. The recent acquisition of Chopperline Flight Training and ownership of the east coast based, Aviation Tourism Australia and west coast based Slingair and Heliwork shows his clear vision for the future: a vertically integrated aviation company the likes of which Australia has never seen consolidating everything from training to tourism and multi engine IFR helicopter operations, all under the Curry Kenny Group umbrella. Grant holds a Commercial Licence on both aeroplanes and helicopters. He is also an instrument rated pilot and holds endorsements on a wide range of aircraft from corporate jets to heavy helicopters engaged in marine pilot operations.
Grant Kenny has always been a leader and a serious participant in all things in which he is involved. His successful streak first emerged when he won national recognition in Surf Lifesaving. In 1979 Grant took out the Junior Ironman event at the National Surf Lifesaving Titles. A year later, in 1980, he achieved an unprecedented and to date unequalled, double victory, as National Junior and Senior Ironman champion.
He went on to experience success for many years, continuing to win the National Senior Ironman titles in 1981, ‘82 and ’83, in addition to many other national titles; now ranking as one of the greatest medal winners in the sport’s history. Through Grant’s achievements, the sport gained increasing public recognition, reaching new heights in 1984, when Grant starred in the film “Coolangatta Gold’ and ultimately launched the revolutionary professional Ironman series.
In 1980 Grant linked with Kellogg’s and was their public face for ten years, being one of the first, most successful and longest sporting and corporate associations in Australia.
In the 80’s he moved into another field of sporting endeavour - kayak racing, competing in two Olympic Games; Los Angeles in 1984 and Seoul in 1988. At the Los Angeles Olympics with his K2 partner, Barry Kelly, the pair won Bronze and was followed with a fourth place finish at the Seoul Olympics.
Whilst competing and training at an elite level, Grant pursued his childhood passion to learn to fly and in 1980 at the age of 16 gained his fixed wing licence and then in 1990 obtained his helicopter licence. Since then he has obtained multi engine, turbine, IFR for both fixed wing rotary wing aircraft.
In the early ‘90’s he purchased his first aircraft, a Beech Baron B58 and followed this with his first helicopter, a Bell Jet Ranger in 1994. His group of aviation companies now operate over seventy aircraft, throughout Australia and overseas.
His diverse aviation interests include leasing, media and news gathering, tourism, general charter, flight training, mining support and marine pilot transfer. Adding to the strength of their vertical integration, the group recently acquired the aircraft maintenance organisation known as Heli Centre. Heli Centre is a Bell CSF (one of only 3 in Australia) and provides maintenance services at three locations across Australia.
